HealthyMindsPhilly met with local Philadelphia retirees Paul J. (76), William M. (74), Joseph B. (74), Ed Z. (76), Robert B. (76), and Bud Y. (68) to discuss how retired men can connect beyond work and retirement.

There’s a group of ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) who gather at Reading Terminal Market every Friday for their weekly catch-up.

“It’s very important to get together and catch up,” one ROMEO explained. “Actually, every Friday, we solve most of the problems in the world.” The light-hearted ease with which the men converse demonstrates the positive impact of social connection in maintaining well-being as we age.

The origins of their friendship are diverse. Some are in-laws, others have been friends for decades, and some joined as friends of friends. These connections, some spanning over 50 years, have laid a strong foundation for connection and community.

Maintaining such a group requires at least one friend who organizes the meetings and keeps in touch with everyone – a Social Chairman. “You gotta text every Tuesday saying, ‘Who’s coming Friday?’ and where we’re going.”

This proactive approach ensures that the group continues to meet regularly, addressing a common challenge among retired men who may struggle to maintain consistent social connections.

The impact of these gatherings extends beyond the men themselves. Older adults, especially men, are vulnerable to becoming isolated and suffer from loneliness after retirement. Socialization is important for well-being and health.

The benefits of being connected extend beyond individuals. As one ROMEO emphasized, “When you come home from work, you’re tired, she’s tired… but when you retire, you sit down at the table and you go, ‘I have the rest of my life like this, 24 hours a day.’ Separate social circles and interests in retirement benefit individuals and their relationships at home.

As one member advised, “You need ROMEO groups. I have this one on Friday mornings, and once a month I get together with my old high school friends for lunch.”

ROMEO groups nourish bodies, minds, and health.

For those considering retirement or already there, the message from this group of ROMEOs is clear: social connections are vital for well-being in later life.
