Alice, a long-time resident of Philadelphia, shares her experiences and insights about the city’s diverse culture and its impact on her life.
Born and raised in South Philly, Alice has spent most of her life in the city, with a brief stint in North Carolina before returning to her roots.
“We’re used to a melting pot of people of different nationalities,” Alice explains, highlighting one of Philadelphia’s most cherished attributes. This diversity is not just a demographic fact, but a lived experience that shapes the city’s character.
“There are cultural differences, but it doesn’t separate us; it puts us together,” she adds, emphasizing how this diversity fosters unity rather than division.
Working at the iconic Reading Terminal Market, Alice interacts with people from all walks of life, including locals and tourists from around the world. This daily exposure to diverse cultures reinforces her appreciation for Philadelphia’s unique social fabric.
When asked about how she maintains her mental wellness after long workdays, Alice reveals a simple yet effective routine: “I go home, I turn on music, and I just decompress that way. Like I just get rid of whatever has gone on throughout the day with some good music and some candles.” This practice of using music for relaxation and stress relief is a crucial part of her self-care regimen.
Music plays a central role in Alice’s life, not just for unwinding but as a constant companion throughout her day. “I need music all day, like, while I’m working, all day, music has to be playing,” she shares. “It helps me to kind of balance and just be in a comfortable space.”
Growing up in a musical household with a father in a band, Alice developed a deep appreciation for music early on. While she doesn’t consider herself a musician, she finds solace and balance in various genres, with a particular fondness for Prince.
Alice’s story offers a glimpse into how Philadelphia’s diverse culture and the power of music can contribute to mental wellness and a sense of belonging. Her experiences highlight the importance of finding personal methods for decompression and maintaining balance in a bustling urban environment.
