Bonnie and Gary Graham are two busy retired Philadelphians. They always knew their retirement would be anything but sitting around. With their professional responsibilities behind them, they have dedicated themselves to a life of service.
Their missions? Supporting gun violence prevention in Philadelphia, and building homes for Native Americans living on reservations.
“Volunteering gives our lives meaning,” Bonnie explains, her voice strong with passion. “It is very important for me to connect with people who have different experiences because they enrich our lives.” Garry agrees, “There is something incredibly fulfilling when you work with the community.”
They attend meetings at Eddie’s House and learn about the impact of trauma among Black youth and families. “Gun violence in Philadelphia impacts some communities more than others, but we all must work together to resolve this problem.”
In the summers, they travel to South Dakota to build homes on reservations. “We pay for all our expenses and support the organization. You have to put your wallet where your heart is.”
For the Grahams, their volunteer work is a natural extension of their faith and values. “We’ve always believed in putting our faith into action,” Bonny explains. “This work allows us to live out our beliefs in a tangible way.”
The are also teaching their grandkids: “They are learning to take responsibility for the community and the world they live in.”
In the end, the Grahams’ retirement shows the enduring impact of a life dedicated to service, and of the benefits of volunteering for physical and mental health as we grow older. Volunteering helps them prevent some of the mental health challenges of ageing, including feelings of isolation, depression, and lack of meaningful relationships.
