Workshop: Family-Based Therapy with Sexual & Gender Minority Young Adults & their Non-accepting Pare
August 5 @ 4:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Sometimes, even years after young adults have come out to their family, there is still tension, conflict and distance in their relationships with their parents. In some cases, parents continue to make homophobic/transphobic comments. In other cases, young adults do not visit home or attend family events because they cannot bring their partner or do not feel accepted or that they belong. Young adults may not share meaningful parts of their personal life with their parents because they fear that they will either cause their parents pain or that they will face further disappointment or rejection.
Parental non-acceptance not only negatively impacts upon the young adult but destroys the fabric of the family. Relationship-focused therapy is a manualized, family-based treatment designed to increase parental acceptance and repair young adult-parent bonds. The model is derived from attachment-based family therapy, emotion-focused therapy and current developmental research on young adults and LGBT+ individuals.
This introductory workshop will briefly cover the five steps of the treatment, including videotaped examples from actual therapy sessions. Presenter Bio: Gary M. Diamond, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, Ben-Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel.
