How to Help: Struggling with Suicidal Thoughts or Attempts

There persists a cloud of secrecy, stigma, and shame surrounding suicide that often prevents people from obtaining the help they need when they need it most. The fear is magnified when someone has attempted suicide once or multiple times and doesn’t know what to do if nothing is working for them. It also hinders those people who want to help from helping. There is a fear of saying the “wrong thing,” or not knowing how to help or where to get the help that is needed that makes this topic difficult and uncomfortable for many of us. This webinar will discuss understanding the mindset of a person struggling with suicidal ideation, what happens after an attempt, what the necessary components when assisting someone with suicidal thoughts, and resources available for helping themselves and those who support them.

Upon completion, the participants will:

• Know the characteristics common to a person who is suicidal
• Understand the importance of empathy and ambivalence in people who are suicidal
• Identify resources and tools for helping someone struggling with suicidal thoughts or attempts
