If so, you are not alone. What self-care actually is \u2013 versus what society insinuates it should be \u2013 are two different things to many of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-care can be defined as broadly as \u201ccare for oneself\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/self-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merriam-Webster<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or as specifically as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the practice of taking an active role in protecting one&#8217;s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oed.com\/search\/dictionary\/?scope=Entries&amp;q=self-care&amp;tl=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford English Dictionary<\/a>).\u00a0 I would argue that most of the time when people hear self-care, they think that it should be something like meditation or exercise; that is not necessarily the case. Self-care can be anything that is beneficial for your overall well-being, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning it can look different for everybody.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivating a self-care practice is important for maintaining your mental, physical, and emotional health. It can have an impact in many areas of our life; for example, social, financial, spiritual, and occupational. Self-care is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a distress tolerance skill for intense emotions. Rather, it allows us the ability to keep our stress manageable and prevent us from burnout. In addition, self-care has the ability to decrease anxiety and depression, lower the effects of stress, increase energy, and improve mood (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/caring-for-your-mental-health#:~:text=Self%2Dcare%20means%20taking%20the,illness%2C%20and%20increase%20your%20energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAMI<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Exploring self-care for yourself<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve never consciously practiced self-care and aren\u2019t sure what it looks like, think about the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When do I feel the best?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do I feel the most comfort?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When am I calm and grounded?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a time or thing that acts as a mental reset for me?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there something I like to do that relaxes me and allows me to focus?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may not be possible for everyone to take a break when they\u2019re feeling overwhelmed, try to take a self-inventory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What am I feeling?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do I need at this moment?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What am I able to do for myself at this moment?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, self-care also includes giving yourself compassion. Recognize that self-care is beneficial for you and those around you; it is not a waste of time or unproductive. Give yourself permission to do what you need in the given moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Self-care examples<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise (i.e. going for walk, yoga)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect with yourself (i.e. journaling, meditate, self-reflection)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage your mind (i.e. reading, puzzles)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do something creative (i.e. coloring, painting, doodling)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reminder<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start small. You don&#8217;t have to practice all things health and wellness at once (or ever).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your self-care routine may begin with making your bed or doing a puzzle\u2026 and that is OK.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What works for one might not work for all.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>About the Author: Jessica Marcacci, M.S. is a psychotherapist at River Wards Wellness Collective located in Philadelphia (Fishtown).
