This is an annual opportunity to highlight information and resources about domestic violence. Unfortunately, domestic violence continues to be a common experience. And it\u2019s more difficult for survivors to get help when abusive dynamics are unknown or taboo to talk about. <\/span><b>Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used by one person to maintain power and control over another person in an intimate or family relationship. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical violence may be one of these behaviors, but abusive behaviors can also include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2022-09-21-the-financial-impacts-of-domestic-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>financial<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2022-04-04-consent-one-key-to-preventing-sexual-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>sexual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or emotional abuse. Survivors of domestic violence often find emotional abuse to be especially painful. One type of emotional abuse is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehotline.org\/resources\/what-is-gaslighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>gaslighting<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You may have heard this word before, but what does it mean?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is gaslighting?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201cgaslighting\u201d comes from a 1938 play (and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fp5iPmpZiNE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>1944 movie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) called \u201cGas Light\u201d where a husband tries to make his wife think she is going crazy. He dims the lights around the house and denies the lights are flickering, hides objects and accuses her of misplacing them, and tries to convince her she can\u2019t trust her own memories. While gas lamps aren\u2019t a feature of most houses anymore, abusive partners often use tactics like these to make their partners doubt themselves. Gaslighting behaviors might look like:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claiming to forget or denying that something happened \u2013 especially conflicts or promises.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questioning the survivor\u2019s memory, making them doubt what they know to be true.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimizing the survivor\u2019s feelings, often to make them feel unimportant.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretending to not understand or refusing to listen to what is important to the survivor.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blaming a conflict on the survivor\u2019s mental health diagnosis or accusing the survivor of not taking their medication to avoid responsibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These behaviors are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1RC1-SPJChk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>very manipulative.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> After hearing someone they love and trust repeatedly say these things, survivors may lose trust in themselves, especially if they have a behavioral health or mental health diagnosis. This can make it more difficult to ask for help, when survivors have been told their perception is the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But help is out there. Often, when survivors learn there\u2019s a word for what they\u2019ve experienced, they feel validated to know that these tactics have a name and the behaviors are wrong.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Healing from gaslighting\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be difficult to question your experiences. Emotional wounds take time to heal, even if a relationship has ended. Therapy can be a helpful resource to process difficult emotions and experiences and learn ways to cope. Some may prefer group therapy, where they can connect with others who have similar experiences. Gaslighting can feel very isolating, so connecting with people who are supportive is important. Friends and family can help someone learn to trust themselves again. Survivors may also find journaling, physical activity, or mindful meditation to be helpful in their healing process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is not one way to heal from abuse, but a good place to start is by asking for help.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or someone you know needs support, contact the <\/span><b>Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline at 866-723-3014 (24\/7\/365). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call 911 in an emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free counseling is available for survivors of domestic violence.
