It was 2002, and the first time overdose touched my life personally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I didn\u2019t know then was that I was going to continue to hear similar stories for the next 20 years, only more often and each one just as tragic.\u00a0\u00a0Back then, everyone knew that heroin was \u201cbad\u201d but there was very little information about the danger of other opioids, like Percocet (perc\u2019s) and Oxycontin (oxys).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the years have gone by, we have seen the drugs change. Most of what is found on the street contains fentanyl, a lethal drug that is found in 80 [percent of the overdose deaths in Philadelphia.\u00a0Fentanyl is being mixed into heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA (Ecstasy\/Molly), and sometimes it\u2019s being pressed into pills that look like Oxycontin and Percocet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible to tell which drugs contain fentanyl with the naked eye. There are test strips available to detect fentanyl and help prevent overdoses. We also know that overdoses can be reversed using a medication called naloxone (brand name Narcan).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Raising Awareness<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aug. 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a day when we pause to remember the lives of individuals who have died from overdose and take time to spread the message that overdose death is preventable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By taking these steps, you can help prevent deaths due to overdose:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get trained in Naloxone Administration <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhten.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral Health Training &amp; Education Network (bhten.com)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carry Naloxone with you and store it in your first aid kit at home<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.pa.gov\/topics\/Documents\/Opioids\/General%20Public%20Standing%20Order.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Public Standing Order.pdf (pa.gov)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are insured: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/59ffe528d74cff8c750763fb\/242fd752-4b45-4271-b06c-09cbe9f62e8d\/0001.jpg?format=1500w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-pay coupon<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are uninsured,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ppponline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention Point Philadelphia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0offers naloxone based on ability to pay.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know someone who uses drugs, recreationally or otherwise<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage them to test their drugs with Fentanyl Test Strips- <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nextdistro.org\/philly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free Narcan and Naloxone in Philadelphia.
