{"id":29084,"date":"2022-07-01T06:15:52","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T10:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthymindsphilly.org\/?p=29084"},"modified":"2022-06-15T13:43:05","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T17:43:05","slug":"for-black-women-ok-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthymindsphilly.org\/dev\/blog\/for-black-women-ok-not\/","title":{"rendered":"For Black Women Who Say They\u2019re OK When They\u2019re Not"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are you feeling?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As leaders in our communities, workplaces, families, and homes, Black women are often carrying a physical and emotional load for themselves and those around them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year we got a sobering reminder of the invisible baggage we carry when we learned about the death of Cheslie Kryst, former Miss USA and entertainment news correspondent at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the outside, the 30-year-old appeared to have it all. With a pageant crown, multiple degrees, talent, and charisma, she exuded what some would describe as \u201cBlack Girl Magic.\u201d But in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CZfNE0EJq9s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirming her suicide, Kryst\u2019s mother, April Simpkins, revealed Cheslie was dealing with high functioning depression.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is high functioning depression? The clinical term is dysthymia. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/when-kids-call-the-shots\/202204\/the-keys-understanding-high-functioning-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, three causes of high functioning depression are trauma, intergenerational depression, and unresolved frustration, something many Black women know about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2007 the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published the report \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go.gale.com\/ps\/i.do?id=GALE%7CA166432598&amp;sid=googleScholar&amp;v=2.1&amp;it=r&amp;linkaccess=abs&amp;issn=08838534&amp;p=HRCA&amp;sw=w&amp;userGroupName=anon%7E3ddfe04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural dysthymia: An unrecognized disorder among African Americans?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d The report states, \u201cAfter more than 250 years of enslavement, prejudice, and discrimination, dysthymia is reflected in chronic low-grade sadness, anger, hostility, aggression, self-hatred, hopelessness, and self-destructive behaviors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019re starting to emerge from the pandemic and the stress of the past two years, it\u2019s OK to not be OK. But if you\u2019re not, it\u2019s important to get help.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are six ways to mind your mental health:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Make a to-do list and a to-don\u2019t list.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Too often we try to take on everything and consequently suffer from burnout. Try this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theladipogroup.com\/trash-transfer-trim-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trash, Transfer, Trim, Treasure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exercise we use at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theladipogroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ladipo Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help you recognize responsibilities and activities you should stop doing, delegate, spend less time on, or continue doing because it brings you joy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Ask for help.<\/b><span> There\u2019s no shame in admitting your emotions might be too much to process on your own. Use resources like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/therapyforblackgirls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>TherapyForBlackGirls.com<\/span><\/a><span> to find a therapist in your area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Rest, rest, rest. <\/b><span>Whether it\u2019s getting the amount of sleep you need each night or taking small rest breaks throughout the day, allow time for your body and mind to stop moving, shut down, and rest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Move your body. <\/b><span>Dance, exercise or do anything that gets your body moving daily. Movement boosts your mood by releasing endorphins which make us feel good. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Curate your social media. <\/b><span>Oftentimes we scroll through our phones and feel lousy. Review the people you follow and content you absorb, and delete those that don\u2019t add joy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Intentionally cultivate and connect with your tribe. <\/b><span>Our tribes of sister-friends get us through the darkest times and celebrate the joyful times as well. Don\u2019t wait until you\u2019re in the depths of despair to reach out.
