Feelings like anxiety, stress, and fear cause our breathing to be shallow, irregular, or rapid. It\u2019s entirely normal. Our body\u2019s automatic response is to protect itself. The trick is to focus not on what\u2019s happening around us, but to what is happening within us. We are breathing. Deep breathing also releases endorphins. This in turn increases a sense of calm and can combat pain.<\/p>\n<p>Other known benefits of deep breathing include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower blood pressure \u2013Relaxation opens the blood vessels and improves circulation<\/li>\n<li>More energy\u2014From increased oxygen to the circulatory system<\/li>\n<li>Less headache pain &#8211; Due to reduced tension locked in the shoulders and neck (you\u2019ll rest better, too!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Practice Makes Perfect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Getting back to steadier breaths is within reach. All it takes is a few minutes of practice. The American Psychiatry Association (APA) created one solution called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L_qO0RFmpRk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Just Breathe<\/a>.\u201d For three to four minutes a day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Think about your body. (Are you breathing rapidly, forgetting to take a breath altogether, or taking shallow gasps?)<\/li>\n<li>Begin breathing slowly and deeply for a count of four<\/li>\n<li>Hold that breath in for a count of four<\/li>\n<li>Slowly let the breath out for a count of six<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why does this work? Our brains can tell when we have varying emotions. Taking a few minutes to exercise a large organ in our body \u2013 our lungs \u2013 refocuses precious energy and retrains the way our body responds to our feelings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-Care is Good Care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost everyone can relate to Grande\u2019s refrain, \u201cTime goes by, and I can\u2019t control my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When this does happen to you, remember to breathe. Better yet, be proactive and take a small step in self-care by scheduling 4 minutes of \u2018me time\u2019 on your iPhone or calendar.
